Are All Half-Hyrox Races the Same?

Adam Di Fulvio • 7 mai 2025

The short answer: not quite. Each race in the HYROX Quebec Series follows a rigorous standardization process — but that doesn't mean they're identical. Some will naturally be faster... or slower. Here's what always stays the same, what can change, and what this means for you as an athlete looking for PBs, podiums, or a qualification.

WHAT IS ALWAYS THE SAME

No matter where or when you race, these elements are 100% consistent from event to event:

  • Order of stations.
  • Weights used.
  • Number of repetitions.
  • Equipment used.

The format and load are therefore always the same. But...

WHAT CAN VARY

The differences between races are in the course and logistics, especially for the running sections and transitions. Here's what can change:

  • Race distance: Each loop is designed to be as close as possible to 500 metres, but slight variations may exist depending on the location and layout.
  • Transitions: How athletes enter and exit the race course — stairs, doors, wide or narrow alleys — can influence the pace.

ExAmple : Verdun vs. Olympia

Verdun (Race #1) :

The running course went around the outside of the building, slightly less than 500 metres. Transitions were through a large open garage door, which was smooth and fast.

  • Result: A fast race with overall shorter finish times.

Olympia (Race #2) :

The course was in a marked-off parking lot, very close to 500 metres. However, the entrance/exit included a narrow door and a small staircase, slowing everyone down.

  • Result: A slower race with slightly longer finish times.

SHOULD YOU COMPARE YOUR TIMES FROM ONE RACE TO ANOTHER?

Yes... and no. It's normal to look at your times from one event to another — but remember that each location has its specific characteristics, and a few seconds' difference can depend on the terrain, not your performance.

What matters is
YOUR ranking. How did you rank against the other athletes on that day, on THAT course?

DOES A FAST OR SLOW RACE AFFECT MY QUALIFICATION FOR THE QUEBEC CHAMPIONSHIPS?

Not at all. Qualification is based solely on ranking, not time. If you run on a slow course, everyone is in the same boat, so no one has an advantage. Focus on your race, give it your all, and measure yourself against the athletes around you.
