Half-HYROX Doubles Strategy: How to Dominate as a Team

Adam Di Fulvio • 22 avril 2025

Running with a partner in a half-HYROX is as much about strategy as it is about strength. To shine as a duo, it's not enough to wear matching outfits — you'll need smart pace management, smooth transitions, and real-time teamwork. Here's how to give it your all at the starting line...

ALWAYS STAY TOGETHER  🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Let's start with the basics:

  • Both partners must run the 500 metres together.
  • You must stay within 2 metres of each other — otherwise, a 30-second penalty will apply.
  • Use the runs to your advantage — this is where strategy can really shine.

THE GOLDEN RULE: RUN FIRST, REST LATER

This strategy is a game-changer: If one partner is the faster runner, they should start and finish each exercise.

Here's the rhythm to follow:

  • The fast runner sets the pace and starts the exercise.
  • The slower runner recovers, then attacks the middle section.
  • The fast runner finishes the exercise while the other rests.
  • Both partners start the next run more evenly matched.

Boom 💥 That's how you run fast together.

SAVE TIME ON THE ROWING MACHINE

It's simple:

  • Changes on the rowing machine take time — even top athletes take 7 to 12 seconds per change.
  • Fewer transitions = less time wasted.
  • Pro Tip: Limit changes to one (or even none) and keep your pace just below the red line.

GO HARD, SWITCH FAST

On exercises with quick transitions (ski erg, sled push, burpees):

  • Go hard, but keep the intervals shorter.
  • Switch often and early.
  • Think: 10- to 20-second intervals.
  • Pro Tip: Short and powerful is the name of the game.

GOOD COMMUNICATION = SPEED

Even the best plan can fall apart without good communication.

  • Talk to each other constantly: "Ten reps to go," "Get ready to switch," "I need five seconds."
  • Be ready to pivot if an activity isn't working.
  • Practice transitions before race day — every team has its own rhythm.

SUMMARY

  • Stay within 2 metres of each other during races.
  • The fastest runner starts and finishes at each station.
  • Fewer rowing machine changes = better time.
  • Change often on fast movements.
  • Communicate. Adapt. Execute.

It's your team, your race. Find your rhythm, support each other, and give it your all. Go Quebec!
